Dogos

Our dogs present the genetics of the authentic dogo Argentino, preserving to the maximum the blood created by Dr Antonio Nores Martínez.

STANDARDS OF THE DOGO ARGENTINO

Height: from 60 to 65 cm (23 5/8 inc to 25 19/32 inc) / Weight: from 40 to 45 kg (88 to 99 lbs)

At the kennel, we only carry out crosses once having carried out a previous genetic test and valuing that the dog to be used is a dogo, above all. We set aside any created specimen that does not meet the psychic characteristics suitable for the breed.

Skull

Solid, convex in the anteroposterior and transversal sense by the reliefs of the chewing muscles and the nape.

Face

Has the same length as the skull, that is to say, that the line connecting the two orbital apophyses of the frontal bone is in an equal distance from the occiput and the alveolar edge of the upper jaw.

Eyes

Dark, lowered by the eyelids and with black or light edges. The separation between them must be large. They have a vivacious and intelligent look, but with marked hardness at the same time.

Jaws

Well-adapted, without prognathism, strong, with large and well-implanted teeth.

Nose

Strongly pigmented in black and with a slight stop at the tip. Very wide nostrils.

Ears

On the top of the head, erect or semi-erect, triangular. They must always be cropped.

Lips

Well rolled up, tight, with free and black pigmented edges. It is required that the lip is very short, enabling the dog to breathe also through the back lip corner when catching the prey. If the lip is pendulous, even though the jaw is quite long, functions as a valve in the inspiration and closes the lips corners, provoking the animal can´t take a supplementary breath with the mouse while catching the prey, and has to release due to suffocation.

Occiput

Must not make relief because the powerful muscles of the nape completely erase it. The insertion of the head and neck are arch-shaped.

Neck

Thick, arched and slim. It has very thick skin on the throat, making wrinkles like the Mastif´s and it is not tight like Bull-terrier´s. The elasticity on the neck skin is because the cell tissue in this part is very loose, allowing the neck skin to slip over the superficial aponeurosis. In this way, the adversary´s fang or claw can only hurt the skin. If it is another dog that tries to hold it by the neck, since the skin is elastic and it stretches a lot, it allows it to catch the prey in turn.

Chest

Broad and deep, with the feeling of having a large lung. Seen from the front, the breastbone must surpass below the elbows.

Back

High, very strong and with large muscles reliefs.

Thorax

Ample. Seen in profile, its lower edge overpasses the elbows.

Spine

Higher in the back and leaned towards the haunch on a slight slope. In adult animals, when the muscle development of the back and the kidney is good, seen in profile, they look like armchairs and present a middle channel along the spine, given by the relief of the spinal muscles.

Paw ( forefoot)

Straight, well-poised and with short and well-joined fingers.

Kidney

Erased by the muscles of the back.

Legs

with very muscular thighs, with short pastern and well-closed fingers. Without dewclaw.

Tail

Long, raised in an arch and with ample curve upwards. During the fight, it is kept raised in a continuous lateral movement like when they greet their owners. The length must try to shorten to improve the harmony of the set, that is why preference should be given to those with the tail that does not reach the rear pastern.

Coat

Entirely white. Only a dark or black spot on the eyes or head in front of the ears can be tolerated. Any spot in a different body part must be disqualified as an atavistic character. The white specimens with very pigmented skin in black must be considered as not suitable for breeding because of the recessive character they show. Furthermore, it could become prevailing on its litters if it mates with another specimen that potentially has this flaw.

BREEDING RECOMMENDATIONS

Anyone who buys a dogo Argentino at La Cocha receives certain tips divided by the most important ages that a dog goes through. We always remind the buyers that these recommendations are based on our experience and knowledge, but it does not tend to be an absolute truth. The important thing is to follow the advice of each veterinarian chosen to accompany the breeding of your dog.

This is a key age for the puppy´s education, what it learns at this time it will never be forgotten. Besides, this is the time when the domain over the puppy from all the family members is defined. So the puppy must sleep outside the house during the first months because the house is the place of those who mark the real territorial domain.

Food must be taken from the puppy, touch it while eating and repress any aggressive attitude that it will naturally have, the punishment must be energetic, must be hit with a rolled-up newspaper. The puppy must go away screaming and have peed due to the fear of punishment.

This means neither promoting aggression against the puppy nor stopping to give it affection when the puppy deserves it. This is basic animal education because what you have at home and what you will share your life with for 10 to 14 years is an animal, not a child.

The dogo Argentino is a natural guardian, but when it comes to protecting its ones, it reaches maturity between 18 to 24 months old. That is why a puppy should never grunt at another person, even though he is a stranger. This attitude must be repressed.

  • Feeding: three times a day (balanced, prepared meals or rich in meats).
  • Exercise:on-demand, without any requirement. Changes in the posture will be noticed and they will be corrected with growth and exercise.
  • Health: must fulfil the complete vaccination plan and worm the dog monthly.

It is common to observe some injuries on the skin, due to the stimulation of certain foods, plant, etc These injuries are easily distinguished because of the colour of their hair. That is why there is no reason to worry about them and they are usually temporary.

  • Feeding: twice a day.
  • Exercise: Essential. It can gradually run or climb fields until it reaches 10 km (.6.2137 mi)
  • Oral anxiety: it is advisable to give it a leather bone as a discharge element.
  • Feeding: once a day.
  • Exercise: reach up to 20 km (12.4274 mi)
